Checks and data

What does a Carhealth check cover?

A full report covers outstanding finance, insurance write-offs, stolen vehicle records, mileage, MOT history, unrecorded damage, market valuation, salvage and auction records and the car's specification. CarhealthAI then explains what each finding means for you.

How does Carhealth work?

Enter a UK registration number (number plate) and we pull the car's records from sources including the DVLA, DVSA MOT records and Experian (finance, write-off and stolen vehicle data). CarhealthAI then reads that data and explains what it means: the risks, the red flags and what to check before you buy.

Where does the data come from?

Vehicle details, tax and SORN status come from the DVLA. MOT history and recalls come from the DVSA. Finance, insurance write-off and stolen vehicle records are supplied by Experian, alongside salvage auction records.

What is in the free check?

The vehicle details, tax status and MOT status from the DVLA vehicle record, the full MOT history with the mileage recorded at each test, and any outstanding safety recalls. It does not show finance, stolen or write-off records. Those are in the full report.

Is the free car check really free?

Yes. Enter a registration, then your email address, and we email you a link that opens the result. There is no card and nothing to cancel. We ask for your email once so we can send you the link. There is an optional box to also get offers and tips, and every marketing email has an unsubscribe link. The full report, which adds the finance, stolen and write-off checks, is a separate one-off purchase.

What if the registration is not found?

The DVLA and DVSA records returned nothing for that registration. The most common reasons are a mistyped plate, a vehicle registered in the last few days, or a vehicle that is not UK registered. Check the plate against the V5C and try again.

Can I check any UK vehicle with just the registration number?

Yes, for UK-registered cars you only need the registration number. You don't need the VIN or anything else. We check the registration against DVLA records before you pay, and the report includes all the data held for that registration.

What if the report shows concerning information?

Red flags such as outstanding finance, insurance write-offs, mileage discrepancies or failed MOTs are highlighted in your report with an explanation and suggested next steps. Use them to negotiate a better price, ask for repairs, or walk away.

Does car tax transfer to the new owner?

No. Since 1 October 2014 vehicle tax has not transferred when a vehicle is sold. The seller's tax is cancelled and any full months left are refunded to them. The buyer must tax the vehicle in their own name before driving it. You can do this online at GOV.UK using the 11-digit reference number on the V5C.

What does SORN mean?

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It is a declaration to the DVLA that a vehicle is being kept off public roads, so it does not need to be taxed or insured while declared. A SORN vehicle cannot be driven or parked on a public road until it is taxed again.

Can I check a car I am selling?

Yes. Sellers use the free check to see what a buyer will see, and to make sure the tax and MOT are in order before the advert goes up.

Your report

What is CarhealthAI and how does it help me?

CarhealthAI is the part of your report that reads the raw records for you. It points out red flags, summarises the car's overall condition, highlights maintenance to budget for, and gives plain recommendations so you know what to ask the seller.

Can I open my report again later?

Yes. The link in your email opens the report any time, and you can download it as a PDF.

What if there is no data for my car?

Where records exist for a registration, the report includes them. If a report errors out or returns no data where data should have existed, we always refund in full. Email support@carhealth.co.uk with your order reference and we will look into it.
