Most reliable cars in the UK by MOT pass rate
Real DVSA test results for 28,924,338 MOTs in 2024, ranked by how often each make and model passes first time, compared within the same age band.
Which cars pass their MOT first time most often?
In 2024, for cars aged 3 to 5 years, Porsche (92.9%), Lexus (92.1%) and Honda (90.0%) had the highest first-time MOT pass rates, against 85.9% for all cars. For cars aged 6 to 8 years the leaders were Porsche (90.4%), Lexus (88.3%) and Honda (85.8%). Among models, Porsche 911 (94.8%), Honda HR-V (91.6%) and Honda CR-V (91.3%) lead the 3 to 5 year band. Rankings compare cars of the same age because older cars fail more often.

- Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), Anonymised MOT tests and results, 2024 files.
- Licence
- Open Government Licence v3.0. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
- What we counted
- 28,924,338 normal MOT tests on cars (test class 4) in 2024, for cars at least 3 years old at the test. Abandoned and aborted tests and duplicate rows are removed. Class 4 also holds small vans, so commercial nameplates such as Transit are left out; car-based vans sharing a car name cannot be separated.
- Pass rate
- The share of tests that were a plain Pass. A fail that was fixed within an hour at the station (PRS) counts as a first-time fail, as DVSA does for its initial failure rate.
- Age bands
- Whole years between first use and the test date: 3-5 years, 6-8 years, 9-11 years, 12+ years. We rank within a band because age drives pass rates far more than make does.
- Thresholds
- Makes: 20,000 tests overall, 5,000 per band. Models: 5,000 overall, 1,000 per band.
- Limitations
- An MOT tests roadworthiness on the day. It does not measure engine or gearbox reliability, breakdowns or running costs. Pass rates also reflect how cars are looked after and driven, and the mix of petrol, diesel and electric cars, which we have not adjusted for. Newer or rarer models can have few tests. Common questions about MOT pass rates and car reliability on Carhealth
It is the share of normal MOT tests that ended in a plain pass, with no failure first time. A car that failed and was repaired within the hour at the test station (a PRS result) counts as a first-time fail, which is how DVSA counts initial failures. Across all 28,924,338 cars analysed, 71.6% passed first time.
On MOT first-time pass rate alone, the leaders for cars aged 3 to 5 years in 2024 were Porsche (92.9%), Lexus (92.1%) and Honda (90.0%), and for cars aged 12 years and older Aston Martin (89.7%), Bentley (87.7%) and Porsche (81.2%). The order changes with age, so check the age band that matches the car you are buying. An MOT pass rate shows roadworthiness on test day, not running costs or breakdowns.
Age changes the result far more than the badge on the bonnet. In 2024, 85.9% of cars aged 3 to 5 years passed first time, against 59.5% for cars aged 12 and older. A make that sells mostly older cars would look worse than it is if every age were mixed together.
No. The MOT checks safety and emissions items on the day, such as lights, tyres, brakes and suspension. It does not test the engine or gearbox for wear, and it says nothing about repair costs. Use the pass rate as one signal, then check the history of the exact car.
To avoid quoting small samples, makes need at least 20,000 tests overall and 5,000 in an age band. Models need at least 5,000 tests overall and 1,000 in an age band. Only the most tested models are shown.
